So, How often shoud you get your gutters cleaned?

How often should you get your gutters cleaned? We get asked this question quite often and really the simple answer is, it depends. There are 5 main factors that we use to answer this question and hopefully by the end of this short read you will feel like you have an informed answer.

Check your gutters at least twice a year

We would advise as that you check your gutters at the end of Autumn and the at the end of Spring as a minimum. If you experience bad weather regularly then check them at the end of each season. This is to check that you haven’t collected more debris than normal.

Why check at the end of Autumn?

In the Autumn season leaves are likely to fall into your gutters which will cause them to become blocked. If this blockage is not clear then birds and pests will nest. Worse still, if you have experience a lot of rain fall then serious water damage to your roof and walls is an very real possibility.

Why check at the end of Spring?

When Spring arrives you are likely to have been gathering dirt and debris from the Winter months that will need clearing out. On average there is more rainfall in Winter; So having clear gutters can ensure a proper drainage flow to prevent water damage.

The age of your property

The main reason we consider the age of your property is that an older property is more likely to have cracked or damaged gutters, facias and walls nearby where the roof and guttering meet. If you have damage here you will really want to get the affected areas repaired as soon as possible. These are a guaranteed sign of future water damage issues, which will cost you more in the long run.

Summary

We have learnt that there are multiple factors to consider before getting your gutter cleaning done. Seaonality and proximity to trees is a major factor and that the age of the property can give clues on the urgency of getting your gutter cleaning done.

Many properties on average can settle for an annual clean. Some, without tall trees nearby, may be fortunate enough to get the gutters cleaned every 2 to 4 years. On the flip side, others nearby densely treed locations will require cleaning upto 5 times a year.
